Market Research

Valhalla Business Advisors has invested into proprietary analytics to inform discussions with credit unions across the United States. There is quite a bit of variation across the 4,863 credit unions included in our data set!

The analysis of the credit union data reveals some interesting trends in the key metrics of Pennsylvania credit unions from 1998 to 2023, with a focus on comparing the current state (2023) with the state 10 years ago (2013). Of course, the driving factors in these trends are a) economic growth and b) industry consolidation. Some observations:

  1. Total Assets: There has been a significant increase in the average total assets of credit unions. In 2013, the average total assets were approximately $77.93 million, which has grown to about $229.66 million in 2023. This indicates a substantial growth in the financial strength and asset base of the credit unions over this period.
  2. Total Net Worth: Similarly, the average total net worth of credit unions has also seen a considerable rise. It was about $8.65 million in 2013 and increased to roughly $25.93 million in 2023. This growth in net worth reflects an overall increase in the financial health and stability of the credit unions.
  3. Current Members: The average number of members in credit unions has doubled over the decade. In 2013, credit unions had an average of around 7,617 members, which has increased to an average of 15,157 members in 2023. This growth in membership suggests an expanding reach and increasing popularity of credit unions in Pennsylvania.
  4. Full-Time Employees (Max FTE): The average number of full-time employees has also seen a notable increase. The average was around 16.66 full-time employees in 2013, which has nearly doubled to approximately 33.02 in 2023. This increase in staff indicates an expansion in the operational capacity of the credit unions.

The NCUA also provides periodic summaries of the industry performance. Here is the June 2023 report:

SAMPLE SCOPE OF WORK

APPENDIX

In addition to our work building data analytics over the credit union space, we have also built an analytics solution that grabs data from the FDIC for community bank performance statistics. This is a snippet from a brief analysis of banks at a state-by-state level, including 3/31/23 ROE measures, per state, at the 25th, 50th, and 75th percentile. We wonder if there is a market within the credit union space to unify these data-sets for benchmarking or competitive purposes? If you have thoughts on this, please reach out to us!
